About the CPA

The CPA is a professional trade organization working to advance the positive and professional image of the pawnbroking industry in Canada.

The Canadian Pawnbrokers Association (CPA) is a professional trade organization advocating on behalf of the Canadian pawn industry. We liaison with the public, lawmakers, and the media to provide a more balanced, educated, and unbiased perspective on the industry.

As a trade association we require our members to comply with our Mission and Values, industry best practices and a strict Code of Ethics. These work in tandem with education and industry stewardship to guide Canadian pawnbrokers into the future.

Our Mission

To represent Canadian pawnbrokers and the pawn industry through legislative support, educational opportunities, and advocacy for our member.

  • To foster professional improvement for members through educational opportunities, peer mentorship and vendor relationships.

Our Code of Ethics

Each member shall:

  1. Operate a ‘Bricks and Mortar’ pawn shop serving local clients.
  2. Obtain and maintain all required licenses and permits to operate legally.
  3. Operate in a way that promotes the positive and professional image of the pawn industry.
    ◦ This includes both the physical and virtual presence of the store and brand.
  4. Deal with customers and the public in an honest and transparent manner with service as a constant goal.
    ◦ This includes truth and accuracy in advertising as well as all transactions.
  5. Behave in a fair and respectful manner towards clients, employees, and competitors alike.
    ◦ Compete fairly, and never speak unprofessionally about competitors or other industry members.
  6. Obey all laws that are enacted by local, provincial, and federal government.
    ◦ Assist law enforcement in the recovery of stolen property and the prosecution of those who deal in it.
  7. Align with the policies and procedures of the Association in a manner conducive to the benefit and welfare of the Association, its members, their customers, and the industry as a whole.
  8. Maintain their financial commitment to the Association.

Please Note: membership in the Canadian Pawnbrokers Association is a privilege, not a right. The Association represents the best in our industry. Membership can and will be revoked for failure to uphold the Code of Ethics as outlined above.
